How Psychotherapy Works

As therapist, I provide a safe setting for the exploration of difficult, sometimes painful, feelings, conflicts and dilemmas. Clients are encouraged to speak freely about whatever is distressing them at the time… there is no right or wrong thing to say. Through careful listening, I try to help you make meaning of your experiences as we explore learned patterns of thoughts and behavior. Ultimately, therapy sessions provide space for you to learn more about yourself.

Because the therapeutic relationship is an integral part of the process, it is also important that the therapist-client fit feel right. Therapy is often a long-term commitment of one or more sessions weekly so compatibility between therapist and client is an important consideration.

Who Can Therapy Help?

Psychotherapy is an effective tool for people suffering from a wide variety of psychological issues: depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, relationship issues, grief, and bereavement.

At times we all feel disconnected from those around us and unable to break repetitive patterns when relating to others. Psychotherapy can help to make sense of our feelings of distress and aid in developing increased awareness and self-reflection.

Significant life changes can leave us feeling overwhelmed and alone. Psychotherapy can help us move through difficult periods of adjustment and provide space for imagining new possibilities.

People may enter therapy in order to know themselves better, to challenge themselves, or to increase self-awareness and self-confidence.

The important but often difficult thing is to take that initial first-step.
